5 Makeup Shopping Tips

A lot of people tell me how they become intimidated when shopping for makeup. I get it! It can be incredibly overwhelming and sometimes feels like theres too many choices and you’ve entered a world of the unknown!

It is super common to buy the first product a sales employee recommends, gravitate to products with pretty packaging, or simply buy a product because your best friend has it.

This often results in a waste of money for products that dont actually suit or work best for you. Here are a 5 makeup shopping tips to make the most out of your makeup purchases.

  1. Have a general idea of what you are looking for
I want you to think a little harder about your makeup needs (and hello, wants!). Not loving your foundation? Maybe its the way youre applying it, or what you’re applying before/after that you dont like. Want a new lipstick? Are you looking for a day to day staple colour, or something to spice up your look on nights out? Try investigating what it is you are looking for, and what exactly is not currently working for you.
  2. Know your skin
Are you more dry, oily, or in between? Does you skin change based on the season? Do you have a warm or olive undertone? Many skin products specialize in skin types and tones. if you are unsure, ask!
  3. Ask questions
Dont be afraid to ask sales employees questions- THIS IS THEIR JOB! I was trained very well at MAC with product information and i know a lot of other brands are the same. If possible, save your makeup shopping for a quieter time at the mall rather than the weekend. If an employee has more time to spend with you, *hopefully* they will. This allows a connection to be made and better product recommendations.
  4. Try the product
A lot of places actually let you touch the product and try it on. THIS IS HUGE. You want to make sure that it suits your skin. Try products out and walk around if you can. It is great to see how products last and look in different lighting.
  5. Spurge vs Save
Makeup can be expensive and a big investment. Not every product needs to be the best of the best in order to have a happy place within your makeup bag. I have created a chart of my personal opinion on where to spend your hard earned money

Splurge $$$ Save $
Tools
– brushes that you use everyday, invest in! I have had some brushes over 10 years!
Tools
– brushes that you only use now and then (or a starter pack) is something you can save on
Eye primer
– if you want your eye makeup to last without creasing, smudging or any movement, invest in an eye primer. it essentially act as velcro for any products you place on top
Eyes
– there is no need to buy a $25.00 eyeshadow in every colour. If you dont wear a colour everyday, pick up new shades on the lower price range.
Skin Products
– you want your skin to look and feel its best
– ensure that your colouring and finish is correct – a lot of these products only require a minimal amount for application. My bottle of foundation lasts me 6 months!
Lips
– lip colours are a fantastic way to add a pop in your makeup routine. No need to spend a lot on a new colour, unless you plan on using it until the very end
